Glossary
Desktop: A desktop computer is a computer that is generally fixed in one place and usually has a separate monitor, keyboard and mouse attached to it. These are commonly found in ICT suites and offices in schools but people often have them at home.
Laptop: A laptop is unlike a desktop computer in that it is a self-contained, fully portable device that people often carry around with them to use where needed. They are designed to run off an internal battery but can be plugged into the mains to re-charge the battery. We recommend that you fully discharge the battery periodically to prolong battery life. Batteries do not last forever and they do need replacing from time to time.
Proxy: A proxy server is a network device, such as a CachePilot, that usually sits between a computer network and its Internet connection. It is often used to provide cacheing for websites, but proxy servers are also commonly used to “filter” the Internet connection and prevent access to inappropriate websites and downloaded files.
Filtering: This box sits between your network and the internet and ensures that children and staff cannot access unsuitable or unsafe websites. The Sophos web appliance that we recommend will not only check the website is suitable for the user (adult or child), but will ensure that there are no viruses or malware on the website before downloading it.
Network printer: A network printer is one that is connected directly into the network rather than to a single computer. The printer can then be made available for anyone using the network to print to, even if they are in a different room or building to the printer itself.
